Grant Awarded for Improvements at Broad Cove Preserve

January 23, 2024
Conservation News

The Peconic Land Trust was recently awarded a $50,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF). This latest grant will go toward our ongoing efforts at Broad Cove Preserve, including removing invasive species such as tree of heaven, bittersweet, and knotweed and replacing the vegetation with native plantings, including oak, bayberry, and little bluestem grass. We’ll also be improving public access, including establishing trails and a welcome area for parking.

Broad Cove is an incredible new nature preserve on Flanders Bay in Aquebogue. The Trust acquired the 100-acre preserve at the end of 2021. We’re currently working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) on its permanent protection. We hope to open the preserve to the public by the end of the year.

We’re thankful to LICF for supporting our conservation and stewardship work.
