Climate Tip | Leave the Outdoors Cleaner than You Found It

April 22, 2021
How-to

When planning your next outing in nature consider bringing a garbage bag with you. While out hiking a preserve or taking a walk on the beach, you can pick up garbage found along the way. Removing garbage takes toxins out of the environment and prevents wildlife from inadvertently interacting with it. You’ll also make the space nicer for the next time you visit.

You’ll be amazed at what people leave behind in nature. During a recent clean-up at the Harold A. Reese Preserve, staff found a fender, old car seat, tires, hundreds of drink cans, and more. They collected over 5,000 pounds of garbage! Don’t worry we’re not expecting you to pick up thousands of pounds in one go, but every can picked up makes a difference.
