About
John Murnane runs Olde Road Farm in Southold, NY. He is at the early stages of establishing a beef cattle farm, although he is no novice to farming. John grew up on a farm in Ireland and enjoys working the land again. “I’ve wanted to get back into farming as I had growing up in Ireland. I’ve been running a construction business and raising five kids with my wife for the past 30 years, and for the last five years have been asking myself, where did the last 25 years go. Having a farm and the beautiful Peconic Bay is the best of both worlds for me and my family. I decided it was time to do what I loved as a kid growing up and maybe slow down a little,” said Mr. Murnane.
Mr. Murnane currently has 15 wagyu cattle with plans to expand the farm to include sheep, chickens and other crops. Olde Road Farm has room for additional livestock since the farm was expanded in 2020. Mr. Murnane purchased 19.2 acres from the Peconic Land Trust to add to his existing 18 acres of farmstead. In the Fall of 2019, the Trust issued an RFP for the sale of the property, which the Trust had acquired in 2014. The farmland was a part of the Trust’s Farms for the Future Initiative and included in the initiative’s leasing program.
“The primary goal of the Trust’s Farms for the Future Initiative is to ensure that farming continues for generations to come. The Initiative provides farmers, both new and established, with access to affordable farmland. In this case, a growing farm has acquired a farmstead, one that includes structures and infrastructure in addition to land. We are excited about this sale, and we look forward to seeing John Murnane and his farm operation succeed.”
