Walk through the historic core and woodlands of Sylvester Manor, hearing stories of the three cultures that came together at the time of the colonization of Shelter Island in 1651: the Indigenous Manhansett People, the Europeans who acquired Shelter Island to provision Caribbean sugar plantations, the Enslaved Africans brought as the island’s labor force and the Free People of Color who continued to live and work at the Manor after Emancipation. You’ll visit the Manor Grounds, the Colonial and Afro-Indigenous Burial Grounds and the Old Growth Forest trail. This tour is not ADA accessible and is recommended for ages 12+. Closed toe shoes recommended. Follow signs for parking, tour begins at kiosk.
